Research has determined that using virtual reality (VR) technology can cause behavioral changes, balance problems (see 1, 2), cognitive problems, eye problems (soreness, vision changes), headaches, as well as other short-term and/or long-term health issues. In fact, last year Meta (formerly Facebook) recalled 4 million VR face liners due to thousands of users reporting skin irritation that required medical attention. Others have complained of different discomforts with the company’s VR headsets as well.
Nevertheless, VR, AR (augmented reality), and mixed reality (MR) headsets are increasingly being promoted for a variety of uses including agricultural (as in worn by livestock!), educational (see 1, 2), employee and military training (see 1, 2, 3), medical (see 1, 2, 3), military use and reducing social isolation in senior citizens. It’s also being recommended for court ordered treatment in Ohio. Now a defense attorney in Florida wants a judge…. So do the jurors get to sue the defense attorney andthe judge if they experience symptoms and/or injuries as a result of using the VR goggles?
