The BBC has published another of its questionable ‘reality checks‘, this one by the aptly-titled “disinformation reporter” Rachel Schraer. Her target is doctor Steve James, who directly challenged Health Secretary Sajid Javid on the science behind the impending vaccination mandate when Mr. Javid visited the hospital where he works last week. Schraer, whose medical and scientific credentials are unclear, has taken it upon herself to assess Dr. James’s claims in a piece entitled “Fact-checking the doctor who challenged the health secretary“, saying the claims are “not exactly what the evidence shows”. However, the evidence she picks for this ‘fact check’ is very selective, and she overlooks several studies that do indeed back up what the brave doctor was saying.

Dr. James told Mr. Javid: “The vaccines are reducing transmission only for about eight weeks with Delta. For Omicron, it’s probably less.”

‘Disinformation reporter’ Schraer responds:

While vaccines remain very good at protecting against becoming severely ill with Covid, the protection they give against catching it and passing it on does wane more quickly.

Dr. James was referring to a study that found a vaccinated person with Covid was just 2% less likely than an unvaccinated person to pass it on, 12 weeks after a second Oxford-AstraZeneca jab – he acknowledges his reference to “eight weeks” was an error.

But the same study found the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which NHS staff are likely to have had, endured better. Vaccinated people had a 25% lower risk of infecting others than unvaccinated people after 12 weeks.

Well, 25% is not very much, and this is not the only study which looks at this, with others finding even smaller effect. A study in the Lancet found no difference in household secondary attack rate depending on whether the index case was vaccinated, and correspondingly no difference in viral load.

Scientists argue that hemp could hold the key to defeating new variants.

The next breakthrough in stopping Covid-19 may come not from Big Pharma, but from the humble pot plant. Researchers in Oregon in the US discovered that two compounds found in the devil’s lettuce can stop the virus in its tracks.

Rather than attempting to smoke their way to immunity, a team of scientists at the University of Oregon isolated two compounds from hemp – cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) – and found that they bind to the coronavirus’ spike protein and in turn prevent it from binding to the outer membrane of human cells.

This latter binding process is normally how the virus enters the human lungs and other organs.

The two compounds are precursors to CBG and CBD, which are widely legal and available to consumers. CBG and CBD cannabis oils and extracts are commonly used to treat anxiety, sleep disorders, epilepsy, and a wide range of other ailments.

CBGA and CBDA “are not controlled substances like THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, and have a good safety profile in humans,” said Richard van Breemen, a researcher with Oregon State’s Global Hemp Innovation Center. Van Breemen added that these compounds “can be taken orally,” and “have the potential to prevent as well as treat infection” by the coronavirus.

Van Breemen and his team published their research in the Journal of Nature Products on Tuesday. However, they have a long way to go before doctors begin writing hemp oil prescriptions en masse. While the study found CBGA and CBDA effective against both the Alpha and Beta variants of the coronavirus, it was carried out on human cells in a laboratory, rather than actual human test subjects.

A corroded pipeline near New Orleans, Louisiana poured hundreds of thousands of gallons of fuel into the environment, killing wildlife

A major pipeline rupture in Louisiana spilled more than 300,000 gallons of diesel into nearby ponds, killing thousands of fish and other animals before it could be recovered, according to records obtained by the Associated Press.

The spill took place in St. Bernard Parish, located southeast of New Orleans, at a line operated by Collins Pipeline Co., documents from the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration show. Though the leak was discovered on December 27, it was first reported on Wednesday by the AP.

The bulk of the diesel drained into two artificial ponds near the pipeline – though some ended up contaminating soil – and ultimately killed approximately “2,300 fish and more than 100 other animals, including 39 snakes, 32 birds, a few eels and a blue crab,” Robert Iles, a spokesman for the state’s Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, told the outlet.

Underwater pipeline behind huge oil spill off California may have been damaged for a year and pummeled by anchors

Collins Pipeline Co. – a subsidiary of PBF Energy Inc., among the largest independent refineries in the US – said it has so far recovered 315,000 gallons of fuel and water from the ponds. The 42-year old line was in need of repairs, but the works were postponed. An inspection in October 2020 found serious corrosion around the same area responsible for the spill, with 75% of the pipe’s metal worn away at the site. The damage should have prompted “immediate repair,” according to the documents, but a subsequent inspection led officials to conclude “the corrosion was not bad enough” to warrant a fix and the line continued to operate.

However, in October 2021 Collins’ parent company claimed that it was seeking to repair the damaged section, but was awaiting federal approval to do so – authorization which apparently only came after the spill had already occurred. Neither Collins nor PBF were fined over the incident.

While the cleanup operation is ongoing, some of the diesel reportedly reached the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, which state and federal officials described as an “environmentally sensitive” waterway. Some of the fuel also remains in the artificial ponds, said Gregory Langley, spokesman for the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, adding that some 130 animals were “captured for rehabilitation” following the spill.

According to a representative for PBF Energy, the line was ultimately repaired at a cost of around $500,000 and resumed operations last weekend. An “environmental damage assessment” is still in the works.

Multiple fire engines have been dispatched to battle flames ravaging a commercial building in San Bernardino County

A fire has erupted at a commercial lot in San Bernardino, California, with firefighters seen beating back flames so they do not spread to nearby homes. The incident has reportedly caused outages in the area.

The San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a two-alarm fire at around 4:35pm local time, according to a Los Angeles CBS affiliate. Footage captured by local media showed the fire in progress as it consumed much of the commercial lot in the town of Adelanto.

So far, firefighters have reportedly been able to keep the conflagration from reaching homes and businesses in the area, and crews were dispatched to repair downed power lines, which caused a brief outage for residents.

There have been no reports of deaths or injuries. The neighboring Apple Valley Fire Protection District and Victorville Fire Department were also called to assist local authorities in fighting the blaze, according to county officials.

It’s so far unclear what caused the building, which is located near a strip mall and several homes, to catch fire.
