Covid kills poor as rich get richer – report

Oxfam says that the poor have died from vaccine inequality and a lack of access to treatment

Oxfam, a charity confederation, has said that while the wealth of the world’s top 10 richest people has doubled during the pandemic, the poor around the globe continue to suffer due to a dearth of vaccines and treatment.

In a report published on Monday, Oxfam claimed that a 99% windfall tax on the pandemic gains of the world’s 10 richest men would raise enough money to pay for vaccines for everyone on the planet.

“A 99% one-off windfall tax on the Covid-19 wealth gains of the 10 richest men alone would generate $812bn,” the report states, noting these 10 men have six times more money than the poorest 3.1 billion people.

The report, titled ‘Inequality kills’, claims that the rich have profited from structural and systemic policy choices which are skewed in their favor. Meanwhile, the poor have been directedly harmed by these decisions.

“Millions of people would still be alive today if they had had a vaccine – but they are dead, denied a chance while big pharmaceutical corporations continue to hold monopoly control of these technologies,” Oxfam said.

The charity claims that billionaires have thrived through the pandemic and that fiscal and monetary stimulus measures have contributed to their wealth as the stock market boomed.

“Vaccines were meant to end this pandemic, yet rich governments allowed pharma billionaires and monopolies to cut off the supply to billions of people. The result is that every kind of inequality imaginable risks rising. The predictability of it is sickening. The consequences of it kill,” Oxfam International Executive Director Gabriela Bucher said in the report.

Oxfam adds that the proportion of those who die from Covid-19 in developing countries is roughly double that in rich countries.

The report was released ahead of this week’s virtual World Economic Forum meetings, traditionally held in Davos, where leaders will discuss global challenges.

‘Nazi salutes’ at Covid protest investigated

A French minister has ordered a probe into the ‘shocking’ gestures made during a march against health passes

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin instructed police to respond to alleged Nazi salutes at a health pass protest held by a presidential hopeful. The organizer denied the incidents occurred.

Darmanin tweeted a photo he said was taken “on the sidelines” of Saturday’s march, organized by the right-wing Les Patriotes (‘The Patriots’, LP) party in Paris. The image appears to show protesters extending their arms in a manner similar to a Nazi salute.

Darmanin said he asked police to report the “very shocking” incident to the judicial authorities so “all necessary steps are taken.”

LP founder and leader Florian Philippot denied that Nazi salutes were performed at the rally. He tweeted a video apparently filmed at the same event and at the same location, which shows protesters clapping and extending both their arms in unison while chanting ‘Freedom’.

Taper dans les mains et crier liberté ! voilà ce qu’il y avait sur la photo floue de M.Darmanin.
➡️ M.Darmanin a donc une nouvelle fois menti, et gravement diffamé.

A video from the same march, but filmed in a different spot, also shows protesters clapping and raising their arms in similar fashion.

“Mr. Darmanin has lied once again and seriously defamed [us]. We are considering legal action,” Philippot, who is running in the April 2022 presidential race, wrote.

La photo dans son contexte et en mouvement. Pour infos @GDarmanin, on ne crie pas « liberté » en faisant un salut nazi. Arrêtez de vous ridiculiser.

The conservative politician elaborated on the alleged incident in an interview with BFM TV. “If there had been 200 Nazi salutes, I would have known about it. The journalists who were there would have seen it, as would have police officers, our volunteers and security detail,” Philippot said.

“So [the allegations] are completely grotesque and shameful, and will be obviously followed by a complaint against Mr. Darmanin.”

French media also reported that around 200 members from the recently banned far-right group Generation Identitaire (Generation Identity) were present at the event.

AFP said that two of its reporters covering the LP rally were attacked. The news agency said the protest was peaceful until the arrival of around “150 individuals identified by journalists as of the far-right.”

A hooded person with a loudspeaker shouted “It’s AFP, f**k those sons of bitches,” prompting a mob of at least 50 people to assault the news crew, AFP said. The journalists escaped unharmed while one of their security guards was injured in the head.

AFP Global News Director Phil Chetwynd condemned the attack on reporters.

More than 50,000 people took to the streets across France on Saturday to denounce the tougher restrictions on the unvaccinated, which were passed by both houses of the French parliament over the weekend. Under the new rules, existing health passes required for entering establishments such as cafes, restaurants, gyms, and cinemas will be replaced by vaccine passes.

The government hopes the measure will bolster the immunization campaign and incentivize more people to receive booster shots.
