As with other European Union countries, the Dutch government has been reveling in the power COVID bestowed on it.In response, the Netherlands has seen huge and violent protests against those draconian strictures. I’m betting that some of those protesters were among the people who voted for Gideon van Meijeren, a young man newly elected to the Dutch Parliament. This young man, during his first appearance on the floor, managed in just two minutes to completely humiliate Prime Minister Mark Rutte. Watching the video will make your day.

For a long time, the Netherlands has had some of the most restrictive COVID measures in Europe. In November, the Netherlands was one of the countries that announced that the unvaccinated were banned from most public places. The restrictions escalated when the Netherlands, a country in which 85% of the adult population was vaccinated, had an upsurge in COVID cases. These restrictions included putting a curfew on all bars, restaurants, and most stores from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. Immediately after the new year, the government also made it clear that, within a few months, vaccination certificates will be considered void without a booster.

In response to the government edicts, the Netherlands has been roiled by protests. There were massive protests in November, December, and (already) in January. The January protest made world headlines when the police allowed (or ordered?) their dogs to launch brutal attacks against the protesters.

In the midst of this upheaval, a young man named Gideon van Meijeren was recently elected to the Dutch Parliament. It’s very likely that his candidacy reflects Dutch citizens’ increasing disgust with the government’s endless extensions of its newly acquired COVID power over the people.

A video is circulating showing van Meijeren, during his first official appearance in Parliament, asking Prime Minister Rutte a question. It’s a brilliant video because van Meijeren sticks to his guns as the Prime Minister sneers at him and at all those who are no longer on board with the world establishments’ COVID narrative.

You will witness one of the great moments of someone truly speaking truth to power. Also, for an added smile, be sure to keep your eyes on the young woman sitting behind van Meijeren.

I’m not sure when van Meijeren took his stand but perhaps it’s no coincidence that, on January 14, the government abruptly announced that it was walking back its restrictions on shops, gyms, and hairdressers—although it is forcing bars, restaurants, cafes, and “cultural establishments to remain closed until January 25 at the earliest. Why restaurants are more dangerous than shops and hairdressers will forever be a mystery.

Incidentally, young van Meijeren’s willingness to be a maverick is something that (thankfully) more young people are embracing. The New York Post profiled five college students who have had it with the woke culture on their campuses and are speaking up. Likewise, on Friday, Tucker Carlson spoke with a young Republican activist who thumbed his nose at the January 6 committee in wonderful fashion.

If we are to emerge from this attempt by the world’s totalitarians (an amalgam of billionaires, millionaires, and leftists) to weaponize COVID and wokeness to end the democratic republics that have held sway for more than 200 years, and to reinstate the totalitarianism that has been the world’s norm for most of humankind, the only way to do it is to push back: Refuse to be silenced, ridicule these self-styled “elite,” speak the truth whenever and wherever you can, and just say “no,” as Martin Luther King and Gandhi both did (and that’s true regardless of how one feels about their politics).

We’re in a war of ideas and our ideas win only if we speak them loudly and proudly.

On-Line Scams To Avoid In 2022

The new year isn’t even a month old but the scammers are back, heck, they’ve never gone away. That’s the bad news, the even worse news is that they are more sophisticated than ever. It would take a week and then some to go through them all, but here are a few in no particular order.

Phone scams: these are surprisingly common. You receive a phone call ostensibly from your bank or a bank, from Amazon, or even from a cyber security company informing you your account has been hacked. Don’t be surprised if you are addressed by your name and the caller knows details about you. People have been tricked into giving away their passwords or account details, sometimes they will pay for an imaginary service. Just as you shouldn’t click on a link in an e-mail, so you shouldn’t return a phone call or phone your bank immediately afterwards. Some of these scammers have figured out how to trick you into believing you are speaking to the bank when in fact you are speaking to a co-conspirator. This is done by keeping the line open.

With regard to clicking links, you may download malware onto your machine, or be directed to a fake website that looks like the real thing.

Ever heard of sextortion? Here is a recent case reported by the local press in Bracknell on January 16. It requires only a nanogramme of common sense to avoid these. Unless you are totally shameless, don’t become embroiled in intimate conversations with strangers on-line, especially attractive ones of either sex.

eBay can be an excellent website for buying quality goods cheap – but not memory sticks! – and for selling unwanted goods. Many ordinary people make good money trading there, but there are many ways to be ripped off.

Five years ago a documentary called The eBay Scammers was broadcast. It was uploaded to YouTube in August 2020 and has been watched over half a million times. Many eBay traders have also uploaded videos detailing their personal experiences of being scammed; thankfully, many got their money back, but here are a few things to look out for.

Counterfeit goods: often heavily discounted, bear in mind that time honoured saying, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Counterfeit goods are also offered for sale on Amazon and other sites. While there is no 100% way to avoid such a scam, eBay allows buyers to rate their purchases, so if a seller has been active for five years and has impeccable purchaser feedback, you are probably safe.

Phishing scams: again, these are not unique to eBay, but just because you buy or sell on the site doesn’t mean that eBay or Paypal e-mail is genuine.

Buyers can also scam eBay sellers; one way is by claiming to have received an empty box or damaged goods which may be a much cheaper product substituted for the one received. Again, you will find many videos on YouTube by people who have been the victims of such scams who will tell you how to avoid them or minimise the risk. A simple way is to video yourself packing the parcel. One user who sells extremely high value ephemera said he prefers to deliver in person, even if he has to catch a plane.

The UK’s Action Fraud website has an alphabetical list of frauds from “account takeover” to work from home scams. Account takeover, a variation of identity theft, can be among the most devastating of scams. There are ways to avoid this, one of the best is to keep your on-line banking to an absolute minimum, something that can be difficult in rural areas or even in the heart of the city as more and more bank branches are closed.

Minister falls victim to ‘moronic’ Covid prank

A positive Covid-19 test was logged under a senior Australian health official’s name

Brad Hazzard, the health minister of Australia’s most populous state, New South Wales (NSW), said people are undermining pandemic response efforts by registering fake positive Covid test results.

Under the system launched in NSW last week, people must log their positive rapid antigen test results online through a state-run app or website. The measure helps officials track the spread of the Delta and Omicron variants of the virus and tailor the response to the pandemic.

However, someone decided to misuse the system to prank the state’s top health official, as Hazzard himself revealed on Tuesday.

“Some people think it’s a joke. Or maybe it’s worse than that – perhaps, it’s malicious,” a visibly angry Hazzard told reporters. “I can now speak from personal experience. I received notification yesterday and again today… that apparently somebody has put my name in there.”

“First of all, it’s extremely irresponsible,” the minister said. “It is juvenile, it is moronic, but it is also just so disappointing to think that you would actually undermine an incredible, hard-working public health team here in New South Wales trying to keep us safe.”

Police launched an investigation into the fake test results under Hazzard’s name. “Not only is this a nuisance, it also corrupts valuable pandemic data relied upon to support essential services. This is not a joke and is a criminal offence,” Detective Superintendent Matt Craft, the state’s cybercrime squad commander, said.

Failure to report a positive rapid antigen test is punishable by a AU$1,000 fine ($720).

More than 50,000 NSW residents logged their test results just hours after the service went live last week, according to Australian Associated Press.

Authorities reported 77 new deaths from Covid across NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, and the Canberra capital territory on Tuesday – the highest daily death toll in Australia since the pandemic began.
